In 2008, the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) commenced in Australian schools. Every year, all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are assessed on the same days using national tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and Numeracy.

Events and publications

NAPLAN 2011
  • The NAPLAN tests for 2011 will be held on Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 May.
  • The genre of the Writing task will change to a persuasive style of writing from 2011. Click here for more information.
NAPLAN 2010
  • 11−13 May: Tests for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. View timetable (PDF, 344 KB)
  • Mid September: Student report distributed to parents
  • Mid September: Publication of National Summary Report: Achievement in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy 2010
  • December: Publication of National Report: Achievement in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy 2010

National Minimum Standards

Test administration

NAPLAN tests are administered by a Test Administration Authority in each state or territory. Contacts for Independent and Catholic schools are also provided via this link.
